How do I bring my fiance "down to earth" financially about our wedding, without breaking her heart?

My wife and I got married for less than $300.00. Twenty three years later we are still married.One of my cousins spent $50,000.00 on her wedding and her marriage did not last a year.Every once in a while my uncle would remind her and her mother of the fact that he spent that much for nothing.
